Star wins for “Precious,” puts her foot in it on the red carpet

42-year-old comedienne Mo’Nique won a Golden Globe for her part as an abusive mother in the critically acclaimed drama “Precious.” Though decked in a fabulous Reem Acra creation and delivering one of the most touching acceptance speeches of the night, Mo’Nique committed the biggest fashion faux pas of the evening by showing off leg hair, as the New York Daily News puts it.

As we also reported shortly after the awards ceremony, on the night of the Golden Globes, it rained cats and dogs. All stars got wet, even as they stood under huge umbrellas to pose for pictures on the red carpet – especially those ladies who had chosen a floor-long design for the event. Mo’Nique was one of them and, perhaps oblivious to the fact that she had forgotten to groom, she lifted the dress to prevent it from getting wet. The rest is history, as the saying goes.

“Mo’Nique may have been so wrapped up in preparing her remarks, in fact, that she forgot to take care of a little beauty matter before the awards – shaving her legs. And if she was at all embarrassed by her shaggy state, she didn’t show it. On the contrary, whether inadvertently or not, she picked up the skirt of her long gown on the red carpet, exposing the issue. A long dress covers a multitude of personal appearance sins – until you pull it up,” the publication says of the picture that is already burning a hole in the Internet from that much circulation, if such a thing is possible.

However, true fans should know that, coming from Mo’Nique, showing leg or arm hair, this is not as much as a fashion crime as it is a statement. Speaking precisely on the topic in past interviews, the television personality said that the purpose behind her not shaving was to show how a true black woman looked. A leg is supposed to have hair, no matter if it belongs to a white woman or a black one, but in particular if it’s the latter, she used to say.

“I must show America what a real leg looks like... because it’s too much in the morning, every morning, to shave, to cut, you got Band-aids baby. I really think hair on a woman’s legs is a black woman’s thing,” Mo’Nique said once. The only exception she makes is to shave under her arms to avoid “stink,” she also mentioned.
