ShapeMix, an iPad app crafted by the company with the same name, enables amateurs and professionals alike to simply drag and drop songs and tracks with their fingertips to make an original mix that can be shared with friends, the developers have announced.

ShapeMix separates elements of each song, effectively enabling users to manipulate tracks and play with music in an entirely new way, Shapemix Music LLC said, as opposed to traditional music mixing apps.

The key features are touted as follows:

Mix in space – See your audio as you hear it. Multi-touch – Move and manipulate several audio channels at once. Visual feedback – Understand how effects change sounds in real time.

Music fans gain immediate access to 100 free tracks such as drum beats, guitar solos, vocals, synthesizers and more, so they can start work, or fun, immediately.

As they would expect, musicians get effects like reverb, delay, flanger and low pass to use with their mixes.

These can be added individually, to each track.

Completed mixes can then be shared with friends by embedding a player on Facebook or other online site, as well as on www.shapemix.com, the company informed via a report published yesterday.

“As a musician and graphic design professor at RISD, I have long been inspired by the connection between audio and design,” said Colin Owens, the brains behind ShapeMix.

“I have spent years researching and creating this instinctual software tool that takes mixing to a new level and provides a deeper interaction with music,” Owens added.

Additional songs and tracks will be available to purchase via the ShapeMix Marketplace, to further enhance mixes, with Downtown Music Publishing being the first of many influential publishers that will feature music in the company’s storefront.

ShapeMix promises to announce specific songs and tracks in the coming weeks.

“ShapeMix is a welcomed type of new technology for the music industry,” said Jedd Katrancha, Downtown Publishing’s head of creative. “Through the ShapeMix Marketplace, our songs will have an entirely new platform, allowing fans a creative new way to experience the music.”

Those looking to pick up on ShapeMix are encouraged to do it sooner rather than later, as the developers are selling it for half the price in celebration of its recent release in the iPad ecosystem.

Currently priced at $4.99, ShapeMix will be purchasable for $9.99 once the launch period ends.
