We've heard quite a lot about Mitsubishi's LaserVue HDTV over the past couple of months, but these "world-changing" TV sets were nowhere to be found on the market. However, it looks like the device has just made it to stores, in due time for Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season, we might add, because Mitsubishi has just announced the immediate availability of this product at various retailers across the US.

"The consumer demand for LaserVue has simply exceeded our expectations and the product is a terrific example of Mitsubishi's technology leadership within the home entertainment market. Bringing laser TV to market is a significant industry accomplishment and we're very proud to be the only TV manufacturer to date that has delivered on the promise of a laser-driven TV," said Frank DeMartin, vice president, marketing, at Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, when announcing the fact that customers would finally be able to get their hands on this very innovative HDTV.

Now, for those of you who haven't followed the subject until now, the LaserVue is a highly innovative, laser-based, 65-inch display system invented by Mitsubishi, capable of providing (at least according to the manufacturer) a reproduction of color gamut in excess of 200 percent of BT.709, delivering two times the color of many of today's HDTVs. Furthermore, it features quite a good level of brightness (500 cd/m2 or nits), and it requires less power than most other television sets existing on the market.

Since we've tackled this subject, let's see what Mitsubishi's reps have to say. "With operating power at approximately 135W, LaserVue is environmentally friendly, consuming approximately one-third the power of today's LCD TVs, and one-fourth of plasma TVs. Living in today's green-conscious environment, consumers can enjoy this color-brilliant, ground-breaking home entertainment product while being mindful of energy consumption at the same time" declared Mr. DeMartin.

Additional features for LaserVue include Smooth 120Hz, x.v. Color and 1080p with an Ultra Thin Frame. Moreover, the LaserVue is also equipped with 3D-ready viewing capabilities and, at just 10 inches thin, it has been designed for both floor stand and wall-mount applications; it also features a full stereo range of sound capabilities with integrated speakers.

However, the LaserVue does have a major shortcoming, namely the fact that it costs around 7,000 US dollars, which will most likely seriously reduce its customer base, especially during this period, when the economy's in the dumpster.
