The biggest surprise at the Super Bowl 2015 Halftime performance wasn’t seeing Katy Perry kicking it off while riding on a mechanical giant lion or hearing Lenny Kravitz boasting about kissing a girl as if that were such a huge thing, but seeing Missy Elliott pop up on stage halfway in to deliver a smashing medley of 3 hits, and own the stage like a boss.

Video of the entire 13-minute performance is available below. Missy’s bit was so impressive and flawless, that many online said that Katy was only her opening number and that the real Halftime performer was the rapper.

Even those who had no idea of who she was thought she did a better job than Perry.

An impressive comeback into the spotlight

Missy Elliott was never really retired, but she hasn’t performed live at a major event (let alone at one as big as the Super Bowl) in years, mostly because she’s been dealing with serious health issues after she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, which is a hyperthyroid disorder.

Having her on stage at the Super Bowl 2015 was the best thing ever, because it not only reminded her old fans of the kind of amazing music she could make (she performed “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It” and “Lose Control”), but it also introduced her to a whole new generation of fans who didn’t grow up to her hits.

So no wonder her tracks are still trending on iTunes and at the top of online charts: her performance was impressive, seamless, powerful and people want to hear more of that.

Fan reactions make Missy weepy

At 43 years old, 20 of which were spent in showbiz, Missy Elliott is a seasoned performer, so chances are she’s not that easily moved or impressed by anything the fans could do in response to her music.

However, reactions to her Super Bowl appearance have been so warm and loving, and she was welcomed back with loving arms and loud (virtual) cheers that she admits she was moved to tears to hear it. Those would be tears of joy, of course.

Embedded below, right above the video of the performance, are some of the things she’s been posting on Twitter since Sunday’s gig, in between links to her tracks – because now is obviously the best opportunity she has to promote her music.

She finds even those who think she’s “about to blow up like Paul McCartney” highly amusing, and she does her bit to educate them by pointing them in the direction of her songs: she’s been here for 20 years and she’s not going anywhere. Still, she’s very grateful to Katy for asking her to be part of the Halftime show.
