In its first weekend Mission: Impossible 3 gained an estimate $48 million dollars. Not bad one might say but the second movie of the M:I series gained almost $58 million and that was 6 years ago. Just add the inflation and you'll realize that the much more expensive second sequel gained much less than the first sequel. It's simple math. That makes the studios rather unpleased with their action packed movie.
Part of the blame is to be credited to Mr. Scientologist super-star, Tom Cruise himself. After being out of the public eye for a little while, he chose then to be too visible and he made too many statements that annoyed the public. Remember the "I'll eat the placenta" moment? What about him jumping like a simian on Oprah's couch? What about his attack on Brooke Shields and anti-depressive pills? So it's rather obvious that some people got irritated and bored with all these clownish doings and just decided to skip the Tom Cruise powered blockbuster.
Another reason is the dropping interest rate for viewing movies in a movie theater. And if you think the movie will do well overseas, think twice. It isn't one of the hottest things to go see a 100% American blockbuster right now. Add the fact that China postponed the premiere till mid July and if you ever hear about one of the movie's producers becoming suddenly hysterical you'll know why.
