That's one truly weird piece of technology

No, there is no need to panic, this piece of news is actually a most peaceful one and no war is going to start. We're talking speakers and audio gear here, as usual. Now, people who are into sound technology may know Fostex from the excellent multitrack recorders they made over the years, or mixers and all the similar stuff. It's time to introduce to you this hour's star: the Fostex GY-1.

If I were to describe it in as few words as possible I'd most likely say "that's one friggin' weird looking loudspeaker, man!" and I couldn't be closer to the truth. The Fostex GY-1 is what Fostex themselves say, a "contact speaker". Now, I really can't exactly pinpoint the contact in the speaker, but this unit (that looks exactly like a sawn-off missile) sports a down-firing driver that blasts sound against the surface it rests upon.

Therefore we're talking here a 360-degree radiating system that will most likely fill in your room using far less power than you'd expect... assuming you don't have anything on your table. At the same time, using several units you could easily cover for larger areas with a lot of ease...it remains to be seen when Fostex will be willing to make available further official technical specs; we'll then see what kind of bass (if any) the GY-1 reproduces.

Until then, I'll just add that the missile-like active loudspeakers come in three very pretty finishes, black, white and a titanium-like silver that will most likely integrate beautifully in any home d?cor (assuming that your house is not one of the missile-hostile environments out there).

From the "leaked" data we know that the Fostex "missile" blasts around 5W RMS and was released on the Japanese markets for a price of ?12,638. In USD, that's around 106, including the very cool blue LED light that goes on when you power up the Fostex GY-1.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
