Nia Sanchez draws “Miss Congeniality” comparisons, mockery

The Miss Universe 2015 beauty pageant took place last night in Miami, and former Miss Nevada and current Miss USA Nia Sanchez came very close to walking home with the much coveted tiara. She was the first runner-up, as Miss Colombia was crowned Miss Universe 2015.

However, Sanchez secured for herself a spot in Internet infamy, with her answer to the question of what she would tell terrorists if she ever had a chance to exchange words face to face.

Hope and love and peace

If you saw “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, the comparison between Sanchez’s answer and the one her character gave in the film will probably come to mind.

Granted, beauty pageants are not the place to discuss in detail such important issues (which also begs the question of why they’re brought up in the first place, but that’s an entirely different kettle of fish), but even so, Sanchez’s answer was hilarious in its naivety.

“I know as Miss USA I can always spread a message of hope and love and peace, and I would do my very best to spread that message to them and everyone else in the world,” she said (see the Instagram video below).

So if she had the chance to talk to terrorists, she would tell them about world peace and love and hope, and thus solve one of the biggest and most serious problems of the modern world. If it were that easy, it’s surprising no one thought about it before.

As you can see from the samples of tweets on the topic, Miss USA’s message to the terrorists was duly mocked and ridiculed online. She is yet to respond to the hype in any way, assuming she’s considering that; she might just let this one die down and not engage.

Miss Universe 2015 got a lot of people talking

Miss Universe is a big thing online every year, but in 2015, it proved an even hotter topic than before. That was mostly because Miss Jamaica came out fourth and the Internet had already decided that she should have placed at least in the top 3, if not actually to be crowned Miss Universe.

Kaci Fennell came in the competition and instantly set herself apart from the other beauty queens by not having long, wavy hair. Shortly, she developed a very big following online by showing that she was smart, down to earth and had a fierce attitude, which many thought would be qualities that would get her in the top 3.

When she was announced to have ranked 4th, there was a loud booing in the venue, which continued even after the third position was announced. To his moment, the Twitterverse is still upset that Miss Jamaica didn’t win, with many convinced that it was those very qualities they had appreciated so much that got her booted – because she was “too different.”

That and the Miss USA terrorist comments kept several Miss Universe-related hashtags trending for a very long time and many people exchanging impressions on social media – which is still happening as of the time of writing.

"What message would you give to terrorists?" Sigh. #missuniverse A video posted by Annie Colbert (@anniecolbert) on Jan 25, 2015 at 7:33pm PST
