Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson agreed to be an important part of a national campaign started by the security company Symantec in a move meant to improve the online security. The "Connected and Protected Child Safety Initiative" campaign will try to inform children, parents and educators about online security matters. Moreover, the Miss America 2007 will give the Keep Safe Coalition award to Senator Larry Craig and Congressman John Dingell for their contribution to the improvement of the protection systems for children online.

"When I was 13, I experienced the potential dangers of unsafe Internet use. Some friends and I made the mistake of giving our names, ages and locations to someone online who we later discovered was a sexual predator. As a result, we received inappropriate photographs from this person, and although the situation was defused without further incident, not all kids are as lucky. That's why I feel an obligation as Miss America to help children avoid dangerous situations online," Miss America said.

Obviously, this is the proper time for the security company Symantec to try to promote its solutions as most of them were already affected by more or less critical vulnerabilities. Starting with the famous Norton Antivirus and ending with the enterprise software solutions, the Symantec applications were one by one the subjects of the security advisories because the security companies from all over the world discovered important flaws that could harm the users' computers.

Anyway, this is an interesting initiative started by Symantec and, as you might know, it's not the first time when the company gets involved in this kind of campaigns. Symantec is also one of the main sponsors of the Internet Keep Safe Coalition that tries to keep parents and educators up-to-date with the latest security matters. This way, the children can be easily encouraged to protect their computers and fight by themselves against the online threats.
