Cryptic Studios, as the developer, and Atari, as the publisher, have announced that they have launched a new content package for their MMO Champions Online, complete with a holiday theme. Players are being asked to make sure that the machinations of the Black Harlequin, a deranged clown, are stopped and that the people of Millennium City manage to receive their normal presents and not the deadly ones now offered.

The new content pack is called Attack of the Misfit Toys and adds a Christmas theme to the entire MMO. Cryptic Studios is pointing out that in addition to Black Harlequin, players will also need to face off against his various henchmen and Clarence, a teddy bear the size of the skyscraper ready to take on the best heroes Millennium City has to offer.

Bill Roper, who is the executive producer working on Champions Online, said that “We really wanted to celebrate the holidays by giving our players some really fun gifts. So we've cooked up a brand new winter event, and created several new ways to share the joy of Champions Online.”

Cryptic Studios is also saying that it has introduced a new referral program allowing all those who are playing the game to offer an invitation to a friend to play the MMO for up to ten days for free. Bonuses are delivered to both the players in such a situation and if the invited friend ends up picking up Champions Online, then the player will get another character costume and 400 Cryptic Points, which they can use in the game.

Since the beginning of the week, those interested in superhero-powered MMOs can also download and try out a demo of Champions Online that permits two fully customized characters to be played until they reach level 15 as players help defend the in-game world from an alien invasion.
