"Just kick the guy and take his gun"

Mirror's Edge is shaping up to be one of the most innovative and fresh games this holiday season. It promises to put the player in the running shoes of a young woman, Faith, who is a courier in a futuristic dystopian city where people are observed 24/7 and the only safe spots are the roofs of the buildings. This is where runners like Faith deliver precious merchandise to clients and evade the security forces of the city.

The game will deliver an extremely unique environment in which you have to run and keep your momentum in order to navigate the obstacles of the city in the shortest time. You also need to avoid the law enforcement forces, which aren't very pleased with your activities. Mirror's Edge won't force you to battle them, but you can disarm them and use their weapons against them.

The game producer Manuel Llines recently talked about this subject in an interview and stressed the fact that you didn't really need to use the weapons in the game, as they would impair Faith's running abilities. When asked if Faith could store these weapons for further use, or throw them before she attempted a big jump, Llines replied that:

"We're maybe taking another sort of leap there, and saying "you know what, she's a runner, she really has no reason to do that." Because she doesn't know what's going to happen there, and the odds are that, as she's a runner, she's going to have to do that. And it would just be gimmicky for people who shoot better... Just kick the guy and take his gun next time there's a guy with a gun. Because at the end of the day, if you need a gun, there's always another guy with a gun. You can just snatch it."

This came as a reply to the statement made by Cliff Bleszinski, the creator of Gears of War, that Mirror's Edge needed more guns in order to appeal to gamers. Llines considered that the main focus of the game was the fact that you needed to navigate through the city as fast and as efficiently as possible, and stopping to shoot bad guys would just be a waste of time, if you could easily run past them and they couldn't catch you.

Let's just hope that Mirror's Edge will confirm these facts and that it will be considered a fresh new title, as opposed to all the big holiday shooter games.
