As far as NASA-built machines are concerned, the Russians still hold the overall record

While Curiosity may be getting all the attention lately, for good reasons, it's only the last in a long series of rovers that have roamed extraterrestrial surfaces.

Through a simple but informative infographic, NASA points out just how far the small Opportunity rover has traveled in its decade of faithful service.

With a 80-meter sprint in just one day, Opportunity became the rover with the longest total driving distance on a foreign body with 35.760 kilometers (22.220 statute miles).

The Martian rover surpassed the previous record holder, the Apollo 17 Lunar Rover. That record, of 35.744 kilometers (22.210 statute miles), stood since 1972.

Note though that this only applies to NASA machines, the overall title holder is still the Russian Lunokhod 2 rover, which traveled 37 kilometers (23 miles) on the moon in 1973.
