Mininova, which is said to be the most popular BitTorrent website on the Internet, has just reached a new milestone as it passed 5 billion torrent downloads. The announcement comes after only one week since BREIN, a Dutch anti-piracy group, said it planned to file a lawsuit against Mininova because it provided links to copyrighted material, links which could allow users to download the content.

Besides the 5 billion torrent downloads milestone, Mininova also reveals other impressive stats, according to a post published in February on its official blog. First of all, today it's ranked 52nd in Alexa, which underlines the fact that it is currently the most popular BitTorrent service on the web. Secondly, the website has no less than 32 million unique visitors per month, as revealed by Google Analytics, all these users generating 510 million page views per month.

"It's nice to see that the download counter continues to speed up: after reaching 3 billion downloads back in November 2007, we expected to reach the current number only in March or April," the Mininova administrators commented in the blog post.

It's no surprise that BitTorrent services, often accused of piracy and copyright infringement, have actually grown in popularity and bring more users than anytime before. In the past, The Pirate Bay, one of the most contested BitTorrent services ever, announced it had reached 12 million users just after several anti-piracy groups filed lawsuits against it. Moreover, The Pirate Bay entered the Alexa Top 100 traffic ranking, joining Google and Yahoo in the most popular chart.

But Mininova's impressive stats don't stop here. According to statistics provided by its own stats service, Mininova still seeds torrents dated April 2005. Moreover, the average number of torrents added per day is 1263, which underlines the fact that Mininova is surely one of the largest BitTorrent services on the web.
