Intel Compute Stick, the mini-PC that runs a quad-core Intel processor and that fits inside a case the size of a USB flash drive, is now available for purchase, although just with Windows.

Even if this is a cool and powerful device to have, you might wonder why Linux users should really care. Well, Intel decided to bundle this Compute Stick with both Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which is a very interesting move from the hardware maker. The Intel Compute Stick was announced a few months back, and it's now finally available for purchase.

Surprisingly, Intel is selling two different versions, depending on what operating system is being used. It might seem a little bit strange, and many users will sneer at this fact, but the two OSes have different hardware requirements. The Windows version comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space, but the Ubuntu version features just 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space.

Intel Compute Stick can be a success

Even if the Linux users go after the more expensive and powerful version of the Intel Compute Stick, they can still install Ubuntu on it, which is already something that many users have said.

"The Intel Compute Stick can transform any HDMI display into an entry computer capable of working with productivity apps, playing local or streamed content, driving basic digital signage or enabling thin clients. It will support Wireless 802.11 b/g/n, a microSD card for expandable memory, MicroUSB power supply and Bluetooth 4.0 for keyboard and mouse. The Windows version, available now, is expected to retail starting at $149. A Linux version with Ubuntu, available this summer, is expected to retail for $110. Online retailers such as Amazon, Newegg, BestBuy.com and others are expected to carry the product," reads the announcement from Intel.

This is just a latest product in a new line of small devices that make use of the new Intel line of processors. Unfortunately, if you want the cheaper version, you will have to wait until June when the Linux version are released.
