Since the full version of Minecraft was launched on PC back in 2011, the game turned many gamers into addicts. Following the success on PC and mobile platforms (iOS and Android), Minecraft was released on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

As of October, 2014, Minecraft sold over 12 million copies on Xbox 360, around 3 million on PlayStation 3 and 17 million copies on PC/Mac. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well PlayStation Vita owners can play Minecraft as well, since September and October, 2014, respectively.

So, back in October Minecraft developers announced the game sold 17 million copies on PC and Mac. Fast forward two months and Minecraft has already reached 18 million copies sold on PC/Mac. The achievement was recently announced on the game’s forum.

Basically, this means that every day 17,500 copies of Minecraft are sold on PC/Mac, which is an impressive number for a game with that longevity.

It will probably take Minecraft another 4-5 months to reach 20 million copies sold

At this pace it will only take about 4 months for the PC/Mac version of Minecraft to reach 20 million copies sold. However, taken into consideration that the end of the year is usually a good month for games developers, there’s a high chance that Minecraft’s sales have been boosted thanks to the Christmas and holiday season.

Even if it takes more than 4 months for Minecraft to reach 20 million copies sold on PC/Mac, it will still be a great achievement for a game that’s been launched more than 4 years ago.

To highlight the 18 million copies sold achievement, you can watch below the very first gameplay video showing the basics of the game developed by Notch.

It was posted back in 2009, which means it took Notch another 2 years to release the full version of Minecraft on PC. Did you get your copy of Minecraft yet? Which gaming platform do you prefer to play it on?
