Mojang and Telltale Games confirm that they're partnering up on a special project called Minecraft: Story Mode, which will be an episodic adventure series set in the world of the game that launches in 2015 on consoles, computers, and mobile devices.

Minecraft is a true global phenomenon, delighting tens of millions of fans from around the world across all sorts of platforms by simply allowing them to forge their own crazy worlds with structures, adventures, and more.

The game won over many of them with its pixelated visuals and its complex mechanics, despite not having a full-fledged story like many traditional games nowadays. While Mojang pledged to continue building upon the game, especially after its acquisition by Microsoft, it seems that the studio does, in fact, require some outside help with fleshing out the Minecraft experience.

Mojang and Telltale are working on Minecraft: Story Mode

As such, the studio confirms on its blog that it's working alongside noted developer Telltale Games on Minecraft: Story Mode, a special story-based experience that will be delivered in an episodic format, much like Telltale's recent titles like Tales from the Borderlands, The Walking Dead, or The Wolf Among Us.

The two companies emphasize that it will be a game series based on its plot, like Telltale's recent projects, and members of the community will be brought in to pitch ideas and suggestions to ensure that the title feels like a Minecraft experience.

"As 2014 comes to a close, we are delighted to confirm our partnership with Mojang to create a new episodic game series based on one of the most popular video games in history – Minecraft," Telltale says. "Minecraft: Story Mode will be an all-new narrative-driven game series developed by Telltale in collaboration with Mojang. Set in the world of Minecraft, the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice."

The first episode drops next year on many platforms

The first episode in the Minecraft: Story Mode series is set to launch in 2015 and will debut across PC, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, iOS, and Android platforms. More episodes will appear after that and you can expect to learn much more about the Minecraft universe throughout their adventures.

Mojang does emphasize, however, that it won't be creating an official story for Steve, the main player model in Minecraft, nor will it explain the world of the game in detail. According to the studio, "it will be a cool game."

Expect to learn much more about it in the following months.
