Indie phenomenon Minecraft has reached over 21 million units sold across the PC, Xbox 360 and mobile platforms, according to new statistics posted by developer Mojang.

Minecraft began as a small independent game made by a single man – Markus "Notch" Persson. The game quickly became popular and prompted the release of both an Xbox 360 edition, which is also quite successful, and a mobile version, dubbed the Minecraft Pocket Edition.

Now, by totaling the sales figures of the three versions, Mojang's Jens Bergensten confirmed on Twitter that the series had sold over 21 million units.

According to him, Minecraft for the PC has just surpassed the 9 million milestone, the Pocket Edition is at 7.3 million, and the Xbox 360 version has over 5 million copies sold, taking the total to over 20 million.

This popularity is closely tied to the passion of Mojang and its other developers, as all teams are working on new content and updates for the different versions of the game.
