Mojang has just announced the launch of a beta for Minecraft Pocket Edition for Android devices, which is supposed to be open to all those who wish to test and offer feedback on the game.

However, keep in mind that this open beta is aimed at Android players who previously purchased Minecraft Pocket Edition via Google Play.

“Today, we’re launching a beta for Minecraft Pocket Edition that’s open to anyone who’s bought the game through Google Play on an Android device. You’ll be able to help with testing and give feedback about new features in future versions of Pocket Edition,” said Mojang.

Minecraft developer Mohjang hopes to be able to launch version 0.8.0 before Christmas, which will probably contain major improvements and new features.

Currently, Minecraft Pocket Edition sits at version 0.7.6, which was pushed on Google Play several days ago. However, aside from some stability fixes and tweaks with Realms, the update did not bring any improvements or new content.

In order to join the beta program, Mojang advices Android players to “apply to the Minecraft PE Test Group and follow the instructions listed there.”

He also mentions that even if you are not part of the beta, the application will still be updated with the final version of Pocket Edition, so Android users should not be worried if they choose to quit the beta later on.

You might also take into consideration that “while playing a beta release, it will not be compatible with current version of Pocket Edition. If you go from a beta version back to a final version, the world may be corrupted. Beta version worlds will always work with the final release.”

You can now download Minecraft Pocket Edition for Android 0.7.6 for $5.99 / €4.49 via Google Play store. Keep in mind the game should be fully compatible with all devices running Android 2.1 and up.
