Accounts are not affected and most mods will support them

The development team at Mojang announces that it is planning to implement the name change feature that it has recently teased on February 4, allowing all players to change the string of characters under which they are known in the game, although the move will only have cosmetic effects and will not impact their accounts.

The team is offering more details in an official blog on its site and states, “The only thing you need is a Mojang account. If you currently sign in to Minecraft with an email address, you’re all good! Otherwise, you can migrate your old Minecraft account here. There are no other requirements, and it doesn’t cost any money.”

A special new Change link will be placed near the Minecraft name in the Mojang account page.

The community has long been asking for such a feature and it seems that it will also work with most mods for the title, although the team says that gamers who use them should contact the maker first in order to be sure.

Names in the indie game continue to be unique, which means that it is impossible to take someone else’s at the moment, but if a gamer chooses to change their own moniker after 37 days, the old one will become available to the community.

Mojang adds, “We will be freeing up all those old unpaid usernames when the new name changing feature is released. If you have an old unpaid name that you’d like to keep, there’s still time to buy it.”

Accounts themselves, which include bans, inventory, statistics and pets, are not affected by a name change in Minecraft.

Still no word on the future of the indie title

Minecraft is continuing to sell well and regularly sees more than 1 million players engaged with exploration and world building at the same time.

Mojang is also delivering more texture packs and updates for the title in order to keep the community interested.

But since Microsoft bought the company for a huge sum of money, no clear announcements about the future of the game universe were made.

It’s unclear whether Mojang will create a true Minecraft sequel or the company is only interested in entirely new projects.
