Gamers will not get it before update 1.8 arrives

Minecraft continues to be a global phenomenon and it seems that the development team at Mojang is getting ready to add one of the features that the community has been long requesting and which required some serious tweaking of the core elements of the title.

A Twitter message from one of the developers shows how the name changing concept could be implemented in the title, but there are no details about when it might happen.

The development team also says that they do not plan to implement the concept before update 1.8 is delivered.

The official support page for Minecraft warns that gamers should be careful when choosing their name.

It states, “Changing your username will be free, and limited to a certain number of changes in a given time period. Username changes will only be available to Minecraft profiles that are on a Mojang account (those that log in with their email address).”

The name change in Minecraft will not affect any player-related data because the title uses a unique identification number to deal with everything that a player does in the game.

Mojang adds, “You cannot change your name to an existing username. That would be crazy. Unmodified servers and Minecraft itself will handle most of the transitions to using UUIDs. Custom mods or plugins will need to update to accommodate for these changes.”

Minecraft continues to sell well on all platforms

The indie game started as a curiosity on the PC but the freedom that it offers and the constant content packs delivered by the development team quickly made it a hit with young gamers who were looking for something other than big releases from AAA developers.

Since then, Minecraft was also launched on home consoles and on mobile devices and a solid community has formed, which is constantly asking Mojang to include new ideas and features.

At the moment, the company is owned by Microsoft, but the tech giant has not announced any clear long-term plans for the franchise.

Initial statements have suggested that Mojang will keep its independence, although there’s a clear fear that developers will leave and the quality of future Minecraft content will suffer as a result.
