Markus Persson, best known to gamers as Notch, says that he saw the launch of his indie hit Minecraft as a chance to create a company like Valve rather than simply get a job with the game developer and creator of the Steam digital distribution service.

Gamasutra quotes the creator of the title as saying that, “Somehow, I felt that Minecraft was maybe my chance to create a Valve, rather than work at Valve.”

The job interview that Notch had at Valve included a programming exercise, a meeting with a number of the leaders of the company, including Gabe Newell, but the developer decided not to accept the job in order to chart his own course in the world of video games.

The quote comes from a book called Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus “Notch” Persson and the Game that Changed Everything.

Minecraft is a hit on both the PC and the Xbox 360 and the indie title is also set to arrive on the newly launched Xbox One.
