Mojang has announced a new Minecraft pre-release for Mac gamers containing a crash fix for video cards with OpenGL support. A lot of other bugs have also been squashed, and the company plans to roll out the final bits later this week.

Mojan reports on its blog, “We finally managed to locate and fix the reported performance issues of 1.5, so now it should be at least similar to the performance of 1.4.7.”

The pre-release Minecraft 1.5.1 comes with improved performance on all platforms, and a lot of bug fixes.

Some “notable” bugs are mentioned in the changelog, including one involving falling blocks, stitching between blocks, issues while placing paintings, and a crash on Mac OS X which served the error message: “OpenGL Function Not Supported.”

Mojang plans to publish Minecraft 1.5.1 Final this Thursday, but that’s only if they don’t encounter any nasty bugs in the interim. Keep those worn-out gamer fingers crossed!
