SDG Systems has announced that Trimble Yuma, a rugged tablet computer built to endure a lot of "punishment," is now available for purchase and runs the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) Netbook Edition operating system.

The Linux operating system installed on the Yuma tablet enables the mobile use of geospatial applications, such GRASS or Quantum GIS. The tablet also features DB-9 serial and USB host ports so that it can interface with other equipment in the field.

“Our customers have told us that they need a rugged, military-grade, tablet computer running Linux. We are pleased to provide that option for them,” said Todd Blumer, President of SDG Systems.

In case you were wondering, here are the specifications for the Trimble Yuma tablet:  1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 7-inch sunlight-readable touchscreen display in a magnesium alloy shell, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, two web cameras, GPS, 32 or 80 GB SSD, and carries a IP67 rating (total dust protection and immersion in water up to one meter).
