The pop industry is a jungle, a kill-or-be-killed kind of world, except that people aren't out to kill each other but they are out to outdo themselves. The latest VMAs that took place this weekend revealed a new rivalry between the unlikeliest of new rivals: Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj.

There is little these two have in common apart from the fact that they are both entertainers, but it seems that they managed to step on each other's toes in terms of “gimmicks.” Miley was made famous by her twerking performance from last year's VMAs, but she declared herself outdone by Nicki who took the stage this year and basically killed it with her twerking.

This has left Cyrus with few options and the only way she could walk out with her head held high was if she admitted defeat. The singer told MTV, “With that [explicit] … I ain't got that [expletive]. I can bring that body, I can bring that wrecking ball, but I can’t bring that [expletive]. Not that Anaconda.”

Cyrus was also referring to the fact that Minaj's “Anaconda” video had also upstaged her own “Wrecking Ball” clip in terms of number of views in the first 24 hours since being posted online. Miley was illustrating the differences that caused Minaj to gain the upper edge.

The conclusion was that Miley decided to move past twerking, leaving it to Minaj, who has a more ample posterior, “I've retired [from twerking], yeah. I'm making some music right now with The Flaming Lips. It's different. It's a little psychedelic.”

The singer added on a more serious note that “I live to be in the studio, that's my favorite part, is bunkering down, working on a record. This record might take me five years. I don't know. I'm just going to work on it until I'm done. It's not about twerking – it's about music.”

Truly, this is the end of an era, that began with that highly controversial performance she did at the 2013 VMAs, where she ground Robin Thicke right into a divorce from Paula Patton (allegedly), and which had parents all over America firing outraged letters to MTV, decrying their adult content which was labeled as TV-14.

Some of you out there might be thrilled about the news that Miley is putting her twerking days behind her and focusing on her music. For us, it's a bit more complicated, because Miley has always been an over-the-top artist, even in her Hannah Montana days, so it only makes us wonder with what other outrageous move she's going to come up with to replace the twerking.

Also, we actually didn't mind her dance moves that much, it was her outfits and that tongue wagging that drove us nuts. So, what do you say, Miley, when are you giving that up?
