The fact that Miley Cyrus finds herself in the middle of a controversy surrounding one of her Bangerz concerts is nothing new. The singer has been raising eyebrows and pulses ever since she set out on the road, but this time, she might have gone a little too far and it could all end very badly for her.

TMZ reports that the pop singer is now being investigated by Mexican authorities for twerking on stage during her concert in the country with the Mexican flag. Mexicans are known to be highly patriotic and don't easily allow such misuse of their national symbols.

The incident occurred on September 16, 2014, and video taken during the performance shows Miley dancing on stage surrounded by her backup dancers. As usual, she was twerking, a style of dance that is generally considered to be lewd, since it involves some very explicit movements.

While the singer is writhing on stage, two backup dancers can be seen pretending to whip her posterior with Mexican flags, rolled up in one hand. The authorities in Nuevo Leon are currently investigating the matter, trying to figure out if Miley did something illegal and if her gesture landed her in a whole heap of legal trouble.

If found guilty, Miley risks a fine of $1,200 (€926) and also being detained for 36 hours in a jail cell. Mexican authorities have usually zero tolerance for things like this. Some time ago, singer Paulina Rubio received a hefty fine of $4,000 (€3,088) for appearing without her clothes on during a magazine photo shoot, draped only in the Mexican flag.
