Miley Cyrus is still promoting “Bangerz,” her brand new album and, as you might have guessed already, she’s still talking about her controversial MTV VMAs 2013 performance and her new, much-debated change in look and sound.

As the former Disney star tells Cosmopolitan, the December 2013 issue, she isn’t doing anything else but staying true to herself. Many voices have accused her of adopting this raunchy image because she’s desperate for attention and simply doesn’t know any better way of showing people that she’s all grown up.

Just as many have accused her of being a poser who’s choosing style over substance and, in the process, wasting all her potential. In Miley’s eyes, this kind of controversy is what makes her so incredibly punk rock.

“Everything is so chaotic and crazy right now and it’s so much all at once, but I’m living for it. I’m just having the best time ever and everything’s falling into place like it’s supposed to. Even people who want to hate on me, they can’t even shut down the fact that I’m literally what everyone is talking about,” she says.

“I don’t want to say that I’m on top right now — I feel like I’m kind of an underdog in a cool way. It’s almost punk rock to like me because it’s not the right thing to do. Like, society wants to shut me down,” Miley continues.

Obviously, she can’t stop, to paraphrase one of her most recent releases. Hate her or not, you have to admit that the world would be a much more boring place without her, Miley believes.

The VMAs, for one, would have been “bad” had they lacked her performance, which was “kind of making fun of how serious the pop industry is.” She wasn’t trying to be sensual with the performance, she was merely taking part in a satire.

At the end of the day, Miley really doesn’t care whether you hate her or not, because she knows her fans will continue to buy her music no matter what. She’s also gotten support from other controversial celebrities like Katy Perry and Kanye West and, as she puts it, “who cares what the media buzz is if Kanye West is telling you that you’re the [expletive]?”
