Miley Cyrus is growing up and moving on in more ways than just by changing her image and sound for an edgier, more mature one. The singer, who is now looking to make a name for herself as a respectable actress, says in a recent interview with Us Magazine that she has no plans of going to college because, as she puts it, if that’s the direction she wants to take, she can very well do that at any age.

As expected, her announcement did get some criticism in the media, with gossip blogger Perez Hilton, for instance, saying she shouldn’t be so quick to throw her education out the window because she may live to regret her hasty decision one day. Still, as Miley says, it’s not like there will be anything preventing her from going to college, should she decide one day that a college diploma is what’s missing in her life.

“My sister went to MTSU in Nashville, so I’d probably want to be there with all my friends, but I’m not gonna go to college right now,” the Disney star is quoted by Us as saying. She then goes on to elaborate on why it’s never too late to return to school. “I am a firm believer that you can go back at any age you want, because my grandma went back to college at 62 years old,” Miley explains.

In the same interview, the singer also addressed the topic of her growing up and how people are basically opposed to the idea of seeing that happen. It’s happened before, Miley says: in fact, the industry is filled with examples with teen pop stars that had issues with the public and the media when they started growing up. The same is going on now with her, Cyrus goes on to stress, but people just need to accept the facts: she’s an artist and she’s expressing herself creatively. Understandably, this will also reflect in the kind of music she makes, especially since she’s no longer a teenager.

“No one ever wants to see someone grow up. It’s like when Hilary Duff started growing up off the Disney Channel. Everyone thought she was anorexic and she did this and that. It’s just because she grew up! She didn’t look like a 12-year-old anymore. […] My song is clearly about breaking free and being out of a cage and being able to be truly who you are. If you see Hannah Montana through that, or are mad because you don’t, turn on Disney Channel. That’s where my show is. My show is still on the air. I’m not done doing Hannah Montana... your true fans are gonna love the artist when they express themselves,” Miley says.
