Milestone: Wii Sells 1M in 9 Months - Fastest Selling Console in UK's History

Nintendo dominates the handheld market as well with an amazing 86% DS owners

Not exactly breaking news, given that it's Nintendo's Wii we're talking about here, but just for everyone to know where the company stands in the games market, Chart Track revealed today the Wii is currently being played by over one million people in the UK, making it the fastest selling home console in history, as

far as the UK is concerned.

According to the report, Nintendo's Wii has passed the one million sales figure in just 38 weeks. That's about 11 weeks faster than Sony's PS2 and 22 weeks faster than Microsoft's Xbox 360. Not even this is breaking news material, but this might just be: "Going into the crucial Christmas season, Nintendo's momentum shows no signs of slowing down with a recent week's UK console market shares for Wii and Nintendo DS Lite standing at 68% and 86% of the home and handheld console markets respectively," reads the report.

Imagine that 86% DS owners means 14% owners of PSP and other handhelds. Need I say more...? Here's what David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK had to say in regards to the performance of Wii in the UK:

"The non-stop demand for Wii even in the traditionally slow sales periods for video games in the UK is clearly behind this record breaking achievement. The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences, provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties, are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages.

With more great games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Endless Ocean launching in 2007, Wii, together with Nintendo DS, will continue to be the main driving forces behind the expansion of the video game market this year."

So in case you own a Wii, feel good about yourself because even though it's quite simplistic, it's obviously the most fun of all. You made a good choice acquiring one.
