As mentioned before Hack in the Box (HITB2012KUL) started, this edition of the security conference hosted a charity auction to raise funds for the cancer patients from Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital in Penang, Malaysia.

Besides unique Xbox consoles and other collectible items, a couple of ponytails were put up for auction: the one of F-Secure’s CRO Mikko Hypponen, and the one of Katie Moussouris, senior security strategist at Microsoft.

The one who had the honor of holding the scissors was Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, founder and CEO of HITB.

Although it probably wasn’t easy to let go of their hair, especially for Mikko, whose ponytail has become somewhat of a trademark, they did it to support an important cause.

So, in case you may be wondering how much Mikko Hypponen’s hair is worth, the answer is $2288 (around 1770 EUR), money that will certainly be put to good use.

Everyone knows that information security experts are good guys and this once again proves it. We applaud both Mikko and Katie for their initiative.
