Mike Huckabee puts Natalie Portman on blast for “glamoriz[ing] the idea of out-of-wedlock children”

She may be the most acclaimed actress of the year, a mother to be and America’s darling, but former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee doesn’t have any kind words for Natalie Portman. In a recent statement, he blasts her for getting pregnant without being married.

Huckabee, who has quite a reputation for making statements that polarize the public opinion, says Portman is setting a very bad example with her decision of being a single mother.

As he sees it, there are many impressionable teens out there who believe that, just because Natalie can do it, so can they. In reality, they can’t – or couldn’t without assistance from the government.

“People see a Natalie Portman who boasts, ‘We’re not married but we’re having these children and they’re doing just fine’,” Huckabee said on a radio show the other day, as cited by Us Magazine.

“I think it gives a distorted image. It’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out-of-wedlock children,” he added, calling the whole thing “troubling.”

Young women who don’t have the same financial situation as Natalie don’t see how far apart they’re as regards possibilities once the child is born, Huckabee added.

“Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing,” he explained.

However, what he’s missing or deliberately ignoring is that Natalie Portman is actually engaged to be married, so she’s not really glamorizing the idea of single motherhood.

She and fiancé Benjamin Millepied have not yet set a wedding date (or not revealed it to the media, for that matter), but they made the pregnancy announcement at the same time they announced their engagement.

Then, there is also the question of how highly Natalie has spoken of motherhood and family life since learning she was with child: she has even said that career and fame pale in comparison to them.

So, clearly, she has every intention of marrying – and none at all of “glamorizing” single motherhood.
