Mika and Akon Were the Big Winners at the World Music Awards

Mika scooped four awards at the prestigious awards ceremony, which honors the world's best selling artists and whose 19th edition took place in Monte Carlo, Monaco yesterday. I don't know about the rest of the guests, but it was definitely a night to remember for British singer Mika and hip hop star Akon. Mika won no less than four awards, for Male Entertainer of the Year, the World's Best-Selling New Artist, the World's Best-Selling Pop/Rock Male Artist and Britain's Best-Selling Artist.

Akon took home three awards. The hip-hop star's worldwide record sales secured him the R&B artist award (ahead of such A list competitors as Fergie, Beyoncé, Timbaland and Rihanna). He was also crowned Africa's Best-Selling Artist and received the award for the World's Best-Selling Internet Artist. "You are witness to seeing me receive any kind of award for music the first time in my life", the singer stated.

The ceremony also honored Canadian singer Celine Dion, who received the prestigious Legend Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music for her outstanding career, during which she sold over 200 million albums worldwide. "Her contribution to music is as potent as her courageous voice", stated Prince Albert of Monaco, who presented the award to Celine. "She soothes the world's hearts and create smiles of love across the face of the world", he added.

Avril Lavigne was also among the performers, and picked up the World's Best-Selling Pop/Rock Female Artist. The 'Girlfriend' singer was also named Canada's Best-Selling Artist. Rihanna also performed at the show and also won the title of Female Entertainer of the Year. She also defeated chart rivals Beyoncé Knowles and Shakira, and was named the World's Best-Selling Pop Female Artist.
