Apple has released an update for Migration and DVD/CD Sharing for new MacBook and MacBook Pro units. Desktop Mac owners will see the update popping up on their screens as well, with Software Update stating that the update is recommended for “all users”. This software is used to get stuff from an optical disc onto a MacBook Air. More information on the contents of the update can be found below.

As usual, Apple is rather vague describing its Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update 1.1...

About Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update

This update is recommended for all users and provides enhanced customization capabilities and improved performance for migration over FireWire, Ethernet, and wireless networks.

This update includes the previously released DVD or CD Sharing Setup Update 1.0 software to allow the computer it is installed on to act as an optical drive "host" for MacBook Air computers.

As noted above, even though Apple's Support page lists the MacBook 13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008 and the MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2008 as the affected products, the update will appear on all Mac OS X users' machines, whether they own a notebook, or a desktop Mac.

The update does specific tricks on both Tiger and Leopard. According to Apple, for Mac OS X 10.4.11, this update installs Migration Assistant 1.0.6; Mac OS X Remote Install 1.1 (located in /Applications/Utilities); DVD or CD Sharing (located in the Sharing System preferences panel). As far as OS X 10.5.5 users are concerned, the update brings Migration Assistant 1.2.3; Mac OS X Remote Install 1.1 (located in /Applications/Utilities); DVD or CD Sharing (located in the Sharing System preferences panel).

The download supports the following languages: Dansk, Deutsch, English, Español, Finnish, Français, Italiano, Japanese, Korean, Nederlands, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Svensk, Traditional Chinese.

Since the update addresses areas in both Tiger and Leopard, system requirements list Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac OS X 10.5.5. The update is listed as being 11.1 MB in size through Software Update, and 40.29MB as a standalone installer.

I immediately started getting kernel panics out the wazoo on a G5 tower 2.33 dual running 10.4.11 after installing this... Not sure if I can blame the update yet, but assorted utility programs have yet to rectify the situation...

since download and installation on my iMac 24" 10.4.11 accidently as it was a recommended software update I can no longer burn DVDs. (these are personal photos and doc's data not copyright media) Can anyone help. I will never let the apple software updater choose what is best for me again.
