Legendary video game designer Keiji Inafune has revealed that its latest project, Mighty No. 9, is almost finished.

Mighty No. 9 is a spiritual successor to the Mega Man franchise, featuring the same old-school action platforming gameplay that consecrated the franchise, only with a bit of modern polish.

The game was crowdfunded through a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign back in late 2013, being one of the big hits of the platform, raking in an impressive $3.8 / €3.2 million in pledges.

Since then, the development team has been hard at work turning the concept into reality, aiming to offer an experience similar to that of the original NES-era games that got many of us into gaming to begin with.

Keiji Inafune's Comcept is working together with Inti Creates on both Mighty No. 9 and Azure Striker Gunvolt, titles that are targeting younger audiences specifically, in order to provide them with an exciting journey into the gaming world.

Many of the developers involved with the two projects decided to take that path after having played various Nintendo games in their youth, and now they want to translate their love for the systems into something that the youngsters of today will be able to enjoy and appreciate.

The wait is almost over

The latest video from Keiji Inafune delivers some good news, alongside Christmas and New Year greetings from the designer. The game has come a long way since its inception, and Inafune mentions that he can't wait to deliver the "frustration of defeat" to everyone this year.

"We're pretty much finished, and from now we'll be heading into the porting and promotion stage," Inafune announces.

The game follows Beck, the protagonist, during his quest to battle eight other Mighty Number androids and then take down a final boss.

Just like the games that inspired it, Mighty No. 9 will feature 2D side-scrolling gameplay, with 3D models and backgrounds and a ton of snazzy visual effects.

Mighty No. 9 is currently set for release in April 2015, coming to a wide variety of platforms. If you're into old-school platformers with a modern touch, you'll be able to grab it on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows PC, Linux, Mac OS X, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U.
