New content in 2009

Game developer Rockstar has really been under a lot of scrutiny these days, especially because of the problems the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV has had. The glitches and low performance on high-end machines have given birth to quite a lot of user complaints, as we reported here.

But that doesn't mean that the company didn't have time to develop new things, as it has just announced that it will be releasing two brand new DLC (Downloadable Content) packs for its Midnight Club Los Angeles racing game. The title, which was released in October, will receive a free upgrade pack, which will add the South Central area of Los Angeles to the game map, and a priced pack, which will bring new cars and SUVs as well as new competitions.

Both packs will add a hefty new chunk of content, about one third of the original game map, which includes landmarks such as Exposition Park, the USC campus, Shrine Auditorium or the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. The South Central Content Pack will bring new cars, including the SUVs, which were demanded by fans, a motorcycle and a variety of new races and competitions in which players can test them out. Both of these new packs will be available early next year, on the Xbox 360 Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Network.

“This downloadable content hones in on a very iconic area of Los Angeles,” said Jay Panek, Midnight Club producer at Rockstar San Diego. “This South Central download features staples of the area, from the landmarks to the types of cars, and we think it really helps enhance the overall L.A. feel we set out to recreate.”

All in all, some quite interesting additions, with a very innovative decision on the part of the company, to offer the new map for free. But, because no competitions will be available in those locations, you can bet that a lot of people will buy the content pack, especially if it offers such a variety of new things. Let's just hope that Rockstar will keep new content coming.
