Football is so unfair sometimes. Unfortunately, it swept off something that could have brought the sport to another level. And when I say that, I'm referring to what a Boro victory could have meant in the history of football. Unfortunately, we'll never know why football refused that chance to Boro yesterday night. Maybe someone up there wanted the English side to taste some of the medicine they have given to their past rivals in the competition. Or maybe football itself didn't want to write another page of history. The story of this final is nevertheless one of a sad loss more than a great
victory
Middlesbrough deserved to win. And when I say that, I take upon me all the consequences of that affirmation. That didn't happen though, Sevilla won. A team that suffered a great deal to have this chance, but certainly does not have the same mind-blowing history in this year's competition as Boro has. The English side should have won not because they were better, but because football is in a continuous need of legends and great fairy tales. A team that fought until they have wasted their last breath, that recovered out of its own dust to start living again was taken out by the cruel destiny.
Of course, I could have written about the match itself, but I'm not going to. On one hand, because it has no story to tell, and on the other hand, because I just don't feel like it. What can you say about a 4-0 win? Sevilla won because they were the better team tonight. Maresca, Kanoute and Fabiano took care of providing Sevilla with their first trophy in the club's history. And they did deserve it. But anyway
The UEFA final is over, and a new Spanish - English clash is on the horizon. The UEFA Champions League finals go under way next week, with a story as good as this one. Arsenal could bring a last homage to Highbury stadium before it will be destroyed, while the pleasure of playing football shown by Ronaldinho and his teammates will try to make it official for Barcelona as the best team in the World this year. We will just have to wait and see if England will get its revenge after the Eindhoven massacre, or Spain will conquer Europe once again.
