As the central processing unit manufacturing company Advanced Micro Devices announced this week the launch of its quad core based generation of processors, many server producers announced entire lines of products that are based on the new and improved AMD CPUs. Among those server producers there is the Microway company which just announced the release of its line of Navion-QQ server systems which are all based on the new Opteron chips. While the Microway has a long tradition of working with AMD processors, this is the first time the company releases a multiprocessor computer.

The new server system from the Navion-QQ family is designed to house a number of four Opteron processing units based on the quad core architecture and they will also come equipped with as much as 128GB of random access memory and a number of eight such servers can be fitted inside the Microway 4U RuggedRack. Like all servers based on the new generation of AMD processors, this one too is designed to withstand high workload applications and to offer extensive performance in database and enterprise-class software applications. Apart from the four processors server, Microway also launched a dual processor system which is designed for use in clusters.

The smaller server, named Navion-Q, is based on two quad core Opteron processors and it comes packed into an 1U rack chassis, so a standard sized cabinet may very well contain as much as 336 processing cores. A single processing unit workstation is also being produced by the Microway company under the name WhisperStation which is derived from its low operating noise.

On the software side of the fence, all AMD based servers and workstations made by the Microway company are available with both Linux and Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise operating systems, while they also come with a composite hardware/ software management system which is especially handy when talking about clusters.

The RuggedRack server mount is provided with front side access bays for hard disk drives as well as hot swapping power supplies which translates into a high level of uptime even when encountering some of the most frequent server hardware failures. All server systems from Microway are also available as multi-function storage boxes as the Navion-QQ can handle up to 48TB of storage space on a single machine, while the CoolRack cabinet provides enough space for a total of 384TB of storage, along with 128 processing cores that share a maximum amount of 512GB DDR2 memory.
