Microsoft continues to indicate strong support for customers running heterogeneous environments. In this regard, the Redmond giant announced at TechEd 2008 EMEA the imminent release of a solution designed to monitor mixed source infrastructures. System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 is set up to play well not only with the Windows operating systems but also with UNIX and Linux. With the first Beta of Operations Manager 2007 R2 expected shortly, Microsoft is providing companies with a single platform capable of managing Windows, UNIX and Linux servers.

“The beta itself will include a number of enhancements including the cross platform capabilities that we originally released as separate beta at MMS earlier this year, some enhanced service level monitoring reports and dashboards, and a number of UI improvements that include a new version of the management pack authoring console. Combined these will provide a lot of opportunities for organizations to make their data center and server management activities more cost effective and efficient,” revealed Paul Ross, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Microsoft.

Ross failed to offer a delivery deadline for the Beta of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2, and only pointed to the end of November for the first bits to become available for download. The Redmond giant will serve Operations Manager 2007 R2 beta through Microsoft Connect. At the same time, Ross stated that Microsoft is right on track to delivering the final version of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 in the second quarter of 2009.

“Recognizing that IT organizations today often mix products from several suppliers and that it is important to be able to manage these heterogeneous environments from a single platform, Microsoft will soon release the System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 beta, which includes cross-platform monitoring for Windows, UNIX and Linux servers and improved service level monitoring. These capabilities deliver on Microsoft’s commitment to openness and interoperability, and will help enable greater efficiencies when operating in a cross-platform environment,” Microsoft promised.
