The company is expected to confirm that it shipped 8.1 RTM in a couple of days

Microsoft initially promised to ship Windows 8.1 RTM to OEMs around the world by the end of August, but word is that the company has already completed work on the OS update, so the software is now on its way to manufacturers.

A report published by The Verge and confirming that Windows 8.1 has reached RTM at build 9600 also reveals Microsoft’s plans to publicly confirm that it has finalized work on the operating system this week, ahead of general availability in October.

Unfortunately for MSDN and TechNet subscribers who hoped to get Windows 8.1 RTM before the public launch, it appears that the company is making serious efforts to prevent any leaks, so no build will be published online by October.

Windows 8.1 will be available as a free download from the Store starting with October 17, while the public launch will take place one day later.
