Microsoft will officially launch the second-generation Surface in only one week, as the company has already started sending invites to a secret event in NYC.

While no details have been provided, it turns out that Microsoft is ready to unveil updates for both the Surface RT and the Pro, as the company has finalized the development of new models to be included in the Surface product family.

Nothing has been confirmed until now, but word is that the new Surface RT is going to be called Surface 2 and will feature a Tegra 4 processor optimized for longer battery life and better performance.

4GB of RAM might be installed under the hood for increased performance, while Windows RT 8.1 will be the default for all users.

As far as the refreshed Surface Pro is concerned, sources close to the matter indicated that Microsoft was planning to give it an Intel i5 processor and 8GB of RAM to easily cope with the full version of Windows 8.1 Pro.

Both tablets will get a new range of accessories, including a so-called Power Cover with a built-in battery for even longer autonomy. A two-position kickstand is also expected to be featured on the new devices.
