Microsoft is reportedly working on the second-generation Surface tablet as we speak, with the new product lineup to also include a so-called Power Cover accessory specifically developed for increasing battery life.

As you could easily figure out by simply reading its name, the Power Cover is a keyboard that comes with a built-in battery and is designed to extend the autonomy of a connected Surface tablet.

WinSuperSite.com writes that the Power Cover will work with the existing Surface Pro, but also with the next two models to be released by Microsoft, including the new Surface RT (reportedly called Surface 2) and the Surface Pro 2.

Unfortunately, existing Surface RT tablets won’t be compatible, the source writes.

The Power Cover will be based on the same technology that’s underneath the Type Cover, so it would weigh 1.1 pounds (520 grams). While the Type Cover measures 0.21 inches (5.33 mm) in thickness, the new Power Cover will be increased to 0.38 inches (9.75 mm).

The way the Power Cover will work is actually very simple. When connected to a Surface tablet, the keyboard will automatically play the role of a power supply, so it will charge it until the battery gets drained completely.

Once you plan the Surface tablet into a socket, the Power Cover is also recharging together with the tablet. This way, Microsoft kills two birds with one stone: it also improves battery life, while also offering quick recharging times for both devices.

At this point, Microsoft hasn’t yet released an official statement on this Surface accessory, but the aforementioned source claims that the Power Cover is very likely to ship this year. Most likely, the new product will be officially unveiled soon after the debut of the second-generation Surface which according to some people familiar with the matter is going to happen in October.
