Microsoft will announce updates for both the Surface RT and the Pro later today during a press event in New York, but the company is also getting ready to introduce a Surface Mini tablet.

The Associated Press is reporting that Redmond wants to compete with Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad mini in the small tablet market, so a Surface Mini would pretty much make sense.

It turns out that Microsoft would only show the device today, but sales won’t begin until November. Both the new Surface RT and the Pro are likely to go on sale in October.

As far as tech specs are concerned, word is that the Surface Mini would feature an 8-inch display, while being powered by a Qualcomm processor optimized for increased battery life and better performance. It would feature Windows RT 8.1 and the same two-position kickstand prepared for its bigger brothers.
