January is going to be a really busy month for Microsoft, as the Redmond-based software giant will hold a dedicated Windows 10 event for consumers and, shortly after that, release a new testing build for those registered for the Windows Insider program.

While the January 21 event will surely bring us answers to a lot of questions and will also provide us with a glimpse into the feature lineup of a few other projects, including Windows Phone 10, the next Windows 10 Technical Preview build is also stirring up interest thanks to the number of changes that are expected to be part of this release.

Windows Insider boss Gabriel Aul confirmed in a tweet that a new build would be coming this month, but no other specifics were provided aside from the usual “plenty of fixes” mention.

Only available for those running build 9879

The next Windows 10 build, which would be shipped to Windows Insider program members, would also be available for those running 9879, Microsoft warned several times.

Basically, build 9879 is the latest official release offered by Microsoft, but in addition to this version, two other releases leaked to the web in the last 30 days and were installed by quite a lot of users out there.

Both builds, namely 9888 and 9901, come with a plethora of improvements, and while it's pretty clear that most will be part of the next official release as well, they are still really unstable and do not work as expected right now. Microsoft says that PCs running any of these two leaked builds won't support upgrading to the new public release, so you might consider going back to Windows 10 build 9879 to make sure that you get the newest tidbits.

Otherwise, a clean install would be required, which isn't quite the thing that everyone would like to do when the new version becomes available.

Lots of news on January 21

The January 21 event will be specifically focused on the consumer experience in Windows 10, so Microsoft is expected to present several new features, including Continuum, which allows users to switch from the desktop to the Modern UI in a second, without interrupting their work.

What's more, Microsoft is also said to share news on Windows Phone 10, the next version of the mobile operating system which could debut together with Windows 10 and bring us plenty of new features, including interactive live tiles.

Obviously, little is known right now about this upcoming event, but everything will be disclosed in approximately two weeks. The event will also be streamed online, so everyone can watch it freely.
