Lumia 640 XL is Microsoft's newest bet in the phablet market and is often described as the successor to Lumia 1320, as some people close to the matter hinted that an 1330 model would never launch.

The device was presented at MWC 2015 and is now becoming available in markets across the world gradually, but in the meantime, it turns out that Microsoft is also preparing an upgraded model that could go on sale only in specific countries.

The Lumia 640 XL comes with a 5.7-inch display, 1 GB of RAM, and a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, which should be quite enough to meet today's expectations and run the majority of apps without any performance impact. What's more, the 640 XL should be able to run Windows 10 flawlessly when the new operating system becomes available later this year.

But a new version of the device is very likely to bring upgraded hardware, and although a reason hasn't been provided by the company itself, such a plan would make the 640 XL more of a flagship.

To debut in China very soon

This new Lumia 640 XL model will debut in China very soon, according to documentation published on Tenaa, and will come with 2 GB of RAM and a 2.2 GHz processor. Needless to say, this makes the device much more powerful, as the company nearly doubles its hardware capabilities.

Thanks to these specs, the 640 XL could really become a worthy successor to the Lumia 1320, as in addition to an upgraded processor and RAM, the device would also feature a 13-megapixel camera on the back. The same unit is also available on the standard model.

Up until now, no details on pricing or market availability have been provided, but it's believed that the device will go on sale in China very soon, while other countries could get it shortly after that.

The new Lumia 640 XL will launch with Windows Phone 8.1 but will come with full support for Windows 10 for phones, just like the flagships Lumia 1520 and 930.
