Microsoft is one of the tech giants that are planning to invest aggressively in the wearables industry, and according to a new report, the very first product in this sector wearing its badge could go live in just a few weeks.

Forbes writes via undisclosed sources that Microsoft is planning to launch a smartwatch “within the next few weeks,” thus trying to make the most of this growing business just before the holiday season.

Nothing is confirmed so far, but we’re also hearing that Microsoft might be planning to launch the smartwatch before Apple, which is slated to release its own Watch in early 2015.

Microsoft hasn’t yet commented on a smartwatch project, but sources close to the matter already provided several details on what could represent the company’s first step in a growing market that would soon also include devices from Samsung and Motorola.

iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone compatibility

Information coming via unofficial sources indicate that Microsoft’s smartwatch might come in the form of a wristband, with the display placed on the inside of the wrist because of what Microsoft considers to be a more natural move to see the information on the screen.

One of the most important features of the device, however, is the compatibility with the most popular mobile platforms on the market, including iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

Naturally, users would expect the smartwatch to work with Windows Phone exclusively, but given the low market share of this particular mobile OS, there’s no doubt that sales of the new device could be impacted.

As a result, Microsoft will make it work with more than just Windows Phone, which means that both iPhone and Android users could purchase one. However, it remains to be seen if Apple customers would agree with such a blasphemy and purchase a Microsoft smartwatch and pair it with an iPhone.

Heart rate monitor also included

One of the top features of the upcoming Microsoft smartwatch is the capability to act as a fitness tracker, so in addition to the standard tools, it’s also expected to come with a heart rate monitor that would help keep track of the wearer’s cardiac activity during sleep or exercising.

At the same time, it’s believed that Microsoft is working to make the device’s battery last longer than that of rival products, with some people close to the development process claiming that at least two days of regular use are very likely to be offered.
