Microsoft already has two different Surface tablets on the market, but the company is reportedly working on a smaller unit that would compete with the likes of iPad mini and Nexus 7.

A report by the Wall Street Journal indicates that Microsoft’s new 7-inch tablet is projected to hit the market later this year, so it will most likely run Windows 8.1, the first major overhaul for Windows 8 that could see daylight in August.

It appears that Microsoft has only recently decided to develop a smaller tablet, especially because competition in the mini tablet sector is getting fiercer, so the company needs a challenger of its own to fight with rivals Apple and Google.

In addition, Microsoft is also believed to be working on a different 7-inch tablet specifically tailored for gaming and that could enter mass production in late 2013 or early 2014.

As usual, the tech giant won’t comment on future projects, so let’s all take these rumors with a grain of salt until an official word on this comes out.
