Microsoft to Give ActiveX Reprieve to Selected Customers

Changing the way Internet Explorer processes dynamic content through the ActiveX components, has created ( as anticipated) various problems with their implementation.
This is a result of many users not adapting their programs consequently to Microsoft's modifications. Up until now the Redmond Company has provided these users with the possibility to install a separate compatibility patch in their web applications that would make unnecessary any further changes in order to keep up with the new introduced ActiveX components. All modifications come as a result of a patent lawsuit loss to the University of California and Eolas Technologies regarding some ActiveX parts.

The main issue presented itself with the last security updates package released by Microsoft earlier this week that renders inoperable the compatibility patch in order to fix the flaws in Internet Explorer. All unprepared users of commercial software that is accessed via IE were affected. As an example, some versions of Siebel clients relations management application from Oracle collapsed when confronted with the ActiveX's changes.

"We're urging those customers to contact their Microsoft technical account managers so we can look at what solutions they can provide," said Stephen Toulouse, security program manager at Microsoft. According to him, solutions may be offered to certain customers but they will be privately distributed and will have to be implemented manually.
