A previous report indicated that Windows 8.1 was set to reach the RTM development stage on August 23 and new rumors posted all over the web now claim that Microsoft is expected to provide OEMs with the final build in the next few hours.

Microsoft hasn’t yet released a statement on the matter, but the company said at the BUILD developer conference in June that Windows 8.1 was projected to go RTM in August, so it’s pretty obvious that we’re very close to this moment.

Timing would be great for Microsoft, as the company officially rolled out Windows 95 on August 24, 1995, so sending 8.1 to RTM the same day 18 years later would be a nice way to celebrate its famous operating system.

As for end users, they will all get Windows 8.1 in October, as Microsoft has already confirmed that the OS update would hit the shelves on October 18.
