Microsoft is expected to announce the name of Steve Ballmer’s successor at the helm of the company as soon as this week or early next week, sources familiar with the matter said.

Of course, everybody expects cloud boss Satya Nadella to be the one to replace Ballmer, as part of a broader plan that also includes a much more active role for co-founder Bill Gates at Microsoft.

According to some reports, Gates would try to work closer with Nadella on a series of projects, while also focusing on new products that could be launched in the next few years.

Bill Gates currently plans to work at least one day a week at Microsoft, but things could change rapidly in the coming months if he feels that his software empire needs more attention.
