The company could allow Ethernet adapters to work with its RT device

Rumor has it that Microsoft is considering adding external Ethernet support to future Surface RT tablets, thus allowing users to browse the web and connect to networks with some other option beside Wi-Fi.

Such a feature would clearly come in handy since the tech giant promotes its tablet as a productivity device, and the company is already working on it, longtime Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley writes citing insiders.

An Ethernet dongle for the Surface RT is also possible, Foley adds, especially because Microsoft has already confirmed that new accessories for its tablets are expected to be released during fiscal year 2014.

At this point, no Ethernet adapters seem to be working on the Surface RT, even though some users have reportedly managed to get a few up and running.

Microsoft, however, has already contacted Pluggable, one of the adapter makers whose products were working on the Surface RT, to remove drivers designed for its tablet, probably in anticipation of built-in support for external Ethernet devices.
