While Microsoft prefers not to talk on Windows RT sales, one more high-profile executive steps in front of the media to confirm that early uptake of Microsoft’s tablet-oriented operating system isn’t going quite as planned.

NVIDIA’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has said during a meeting with analysts that Windows RT is a rather disappointing product, but that he has high hopes that sales will take off in the coming months.

"Windows RT is disappointing to us because we expected to have sold more than we did. Everybody expected to have sold more than we did,” the CEO said.

While he also calls for an RT version of Microsoft Outlook, Huang explains that Windows RT is an essential product for several companies on the market, including Microsoft itself and ARM, the vendor supplying the chips for RT tablets.

“They need to find a way to get into that ecosystem,” Huang explained, encouraging Microsoft to continue its efforts to promote Windows RT.

I think that there is something that these CEOs don't take into consideration. That is, the world market has gone down in the last 2-3 years, people are more concerned about their bills than one (bad i'd might add) OS that targeted the tablet market. One mistake is that it came too late and in the wrong time frame. Anything else...just speculation.

I agree. Windows RT arrived too late to the market, so it's basically impossible to make a name for itself.

The funny thing is that Microsoft still thinks that it could make RT a success by investing billions of dollars in advertising. This is just wrong and unless Microsoft changes its leadership, the company will simply continue wasting money.

As someone who owns a Surface RT, I can say, "It's a great tablet. I love the way it looks and feels in my hands."

I think the issues facing Surface RT uptake right now are threefold:

1-Confusion with the name. "RT" doesn't mean anything to consumers. It should be renamed to "Windows Mobile" & it should be stressed that it only runs Metro apps. It doesn't help matters that Office runs in "desktop mode" on the device. Microsoft needs to release a Metro-only version of office asap.

2-It still needs more apps. Once there are more apps, then there will be more of a reason to pick one up.

3-They're too expensive (or at least consumers think so). Microsoft should've sold these for $299, not $499. I believe they would've flown off the shelves at that price. Even if Microsoft would've only had broken even, at least they product would've been in people's hands and seen out "in the wild" and it would've built momentum for it. Now, unfortunately, it looks like the next Zune, and may not be able to recover.

In short, Microsoft should've used the Xbox strategy which succeeded (sell at a loss to gain market share & build momentum) instead of the Zune strategy which failed (sell a premium product at a premium price). Now, RT looks like a turd (even though it's a great product) and I'm not sure it can recover... which would really be a shame.
