Microsoft was expected to make available for download a Windows Phone 8 SDK before the end of the summer, but the developer tools have already emerged online, along with some other files and documentation from Microsoft.

Weighing 1.35 GB, the SDK reportedly requires Windows 8 Release Preview to be installed on the target device to work.

The tool is labeled Windows Phone SDK 8.0 (LKG25), LiveSide.net reports, adding that the platform version is 8511.9744.20120716-1509, released on July 19th.

To use the SDK, developers will also need Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, as well as a minimum of 4GB of free hard disk space, 8 GB of RAM (recommended), and a 64-bit (x64) system.

The release notes also offer some info on the Windows Phone Emulator: “Second Level Address Translation (SLAT). See the Installation prerequisites section for more information about SLAT.”
